What is a Hookah

What is Hookah? Basically it is a water pipe for smoking tobacco. The Hookah originated in India around the turn of the 17th century. It then became popular through out the Middle East. Hookah smoking has recently become popular in North America where it is trendy with youth and adults alike. Hookah lounges have become a very social place to relax and smoke Hookah

In the beginning Hookah was introduced in an attempt to make smoking tobacco less harmful. Tobacco is placed in the bowl of the hookah and covered with burning coal. The smoke is then inhaled through a hose leading off the water jar the tobacco is then filtered through the water before the smoker inhales it.

More on Hookahs

The tobacco smoked in a hookah is often sweetened with honey, molasses, fruit, or aromatic oils. There is a large variety of hookah flavors, including blended flavors. They also come in different strengths of tobacco and there are even hookah blends that are tobacco-free.

Though the hookah originated in India, hookah smoking was not always widespread in the country, being limited to rural areas until very recently. Rather, it has become a tradition of countries in the Arab world and surrounding countries..

Although the Hookah was introduced as a healthier alternative to tobacco there is  not enough research to prove this is true. In fact research suggests that the Hookah is not any safer at all, however more studies are necessary before conclusive results can be determined.

This is a general explanation of what is hookah. It is advisable that you do research Hookah and smoking Hookah before you decide if it is right for you.
